Nathan and Sarah Esala, along with their children Karissa, Annaka, Aili, and Isaac have served as Lutheran Bible Translator (LBT) missionaries in Ghana, West Africa since 2003.
Rev. Nathan serves the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana (ELCG) as translation advisor for the Komba Bible Project. Over the past several years he has been learning the language, developing partnerships with the Komba church and community leaders, analyzing and documenting the linguistic features of the language, training translators, and checking translated drafts for biblical accuracy. In addition he has learned how to drive a hard bargain and a motorcycle, work with solar powered electricity, control water run off, and patch leaky roofs.
Sarah is primarily responsible for household management and homeschooling their kids. She plans and executes three meals a day, barters for good prices at the local market, and tries to keep her family clothed. Drawing from her training as a registered nurse, she occasionally advises various people on medical issues and is pretty good at putting on band aids.
The Esala kids enjoy the freedoms of living in a rural African setting. Often you can find them climbing trees to pick mangos and cashew fruit, helping friends with chores, or riding bikes. They also thrive at mud pie creations and can't turn down an opportunity to hear a story read aloud, which is their favorite part of school.
